Which keywords work best on Pinterest?

A few weeks ago we talked about my top tips on how to grow your Pinterest. A few questions came up after that blogpost, and I also asked you what your general questions about Pinterest are. If you want to learn more about Pinterest check out my E-Books here.

What keywords should I be using?

The keywords depend on the content you’re posting. Like I mentioned in the previous blog post Pinterest is a search engine. So similar to how you would use keywords to optimize your website for Google, you want to optimize your keywords/captions for the Pinterest search algorithm.

Using the screenshot below I will explain how I usually go about keywords:

pinterest-questions-1.jpg

In the Title (1) of the Pin I describe what’s visible in the image. I’ve found that anything “inspiration” related works very well, so I try to incorporate that word into the Title. Always use words that actually relate to the photo. If you just use popular keywords that have nothing to do with your image the people seeing your image won’t be interested and it will backfire.

In the Description (2) of the Pin I use similar words as in the Title but reframe and elaborate a little bit more. I also add a few Hashtags – these aren’t as important as on Instagram, but it’s an easy way to add in some additional keywords without incorporating them into the text.

How to pick keywords? When deciding which keywords you will use think this way: If I want to find this Pin what would I be typing into the search bar? For this image I personally would search for “product photography inspiration”, “skincare product photography” or even brand speficially “origins face mask”. So these were the words I incorporated in my Title and Description.

What content works best on Pinterest?

Think about what you pin onto your boards and why you go on Pinterest – usually to search for cool ideas and inspiration. So those are the topics you should cater to. With photography this is fairly easy, because any photo can be used as inspiration! As mentioned before you can simply add the word “inspiration” or something similar to your Title (1).
